How to Make Homemade Pizza (and Why You Shouldn’t)

How to make homemade pizza and why you should not

Do you ever crave the delicious combination of cheese, sauce and dough but don’t want to settle for the frozen stuff again? We agree that there’s something unique about the delectable taste of fresh homemade pizza that the frozen aisle can’t capture.

Follow this guide and learn how to prepare homemade pizza, so you can quench your pizza cravings.

Making the Pizza Dough:

The dough is the foundation of a well-made pizza. To make homemade pizza crust, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2-4 cups of all-purpose flour or bread flour
  • 1 packet of instant yeast
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 1/3 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder and dried basil leaves
  • 1 cup warm water at 105 – 110° Fahrenheit
  • 2-4 cups of all-purpose flour or bread flour

You also need the following equipment to put together these ingredients:

  • 2 large mixing bowls
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Rolling pin
  • Pastry brush
  • Plastic wrap
  • Kitchen towel

How to Form the Dough

Follow this process to make perfect dough for your pizza:

  1. Put the cup of warm water into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Combine the instant yeast, salt, sugar, garlic powder, dried basil, 2 cups of flour and olive oil into the bowl and stir to mix.
  3. Allow the mixed ingredients to rest for about 5 minutes or until it begins to get foamy.
  4. Add at least 1 additional cup of flour and stir until the dough starts to form a ball. The dough ball should be somewhat sticky but able to be worked with by your hands. If it’s too dry, you may add additional tablespoons of water.
  5. In the second bowl, drizzle and brush the rest of the olive oil until the bowl’s interior is covered.
  6. Lightly dust your hands with flour and carefully knead the dough until it forms a smooth and firm ball. Transfer the ball of dough to the bowl with the olive oil. If needed, you may add up to 1/2 cup of extra flour.
  7. Cover this bowl with plastic wrap and heat it, so it doubles in size. This process can take about 30 minutes to an hour. In the meantime, you should work on preparing a lightly floured surface.
  8. When the dough has risen, deflate it gently with your hands and move it to the floured surface you prepared. Knead the dough on this surface until it’s smooth.
  9. Using the rolling pin, spread the dough into a 12-inch circle on the floured surface.
  10. Cover this dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it sit for about 10 minutes.

What You Need to Make Homemade Sauce

Pizza sauce takes minimal time and effort to prepare and tastes amazing when done correctly. To make high-quality homemade pizza sauce, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 10 Roma tomatoes
  • 1  cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of white sugar
  • A minced clove of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • 1-2 tablespoons of oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil

To properly put together these ingredients for your sauce, you will need the following:

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spatula
  • Blender or food processor
  • Large pot

How to Make Homemade Pizza Sauce

Follow these simple steps to craft your yummy homemade sauce:

  1. Place the tomatoes, olive oil and water into a food processor or blender, and mix them together until smooth. Place this mixture into a large pot.
  2. Add the minced garlic, basil, oregano, salt, sugar, freshly cracked pepper and onion powder. Set it to medium-low heat, and let it simmer until it reaches a thick consistency. This will take 1 to 2 hours, with occasional stirring required.
  3. Pour the sauce into a food processor or blender and blend until your sauce reaches the desired consistency.

Your choice of cheese can make a significant impact on your pizza's flavor

What’s the Best Cheese for Homemade Pizza?

Your choice of cheese can make a significant impact on your pizza’s overall flavor. The most popular option tends to be mozzarella cheese. Mozzarella cheese has a low moisture and fat content, allowing it to turn golden brown when exposed to heat.

This cheese’s low moisture and fat content also make it capable of covering the surface of the pizza evenly while maintaining a stretchy consistency. If you don’t have any mozzarella cheese on hand, there are many excellent alternatives. Cheddar, parmesan and provolone cheese go well on pizza. You can also mix cheeses for a unique flavor combination.

How to Layer Your Pizza:

Now that your homemade pizza dough, sauce and cheese are ready, it’s time to put them together.

  1. First, lay your dough out on a 12-inch pizza pan, and lather your fresh tomato sauce equally across it.
  2. After the sauce is applied, cover the surface area with a layer of shredded cheese.
  3. Add your preferred toppings to the pizza.

Following this order will allow the cheese to melt into the sauce and keep the toppings visible so people can easily identify the type of pizza.

How Long Should You Cook/Bake Pizza?

You’re almost there. All you have to do now is cook the pizza. Preheat the oven to 425°Fahrenheit. When the oven is ready, place the pizza inside on the lower rack for 13-20 minutes, or until the crust is lightly browned. Be careful when removing from the oven as it will be very hot.

Why You Should Just Choose a Restaurant

If you’ve made it down this far, you hopefully have a delicious homemade pizza ready to eat. If not and you’re still hungry, you may want to save yourself some time and effort by ordering one from a local restaurant.

It’s clear you’ve got pizza on the mind, and there’s nothing quite like a hot, professional-grade pizza. Ordering fresh, quality pizza from a restaurant can give you a pleasant eating experience free from stress and clean-up.

Here are a few additional reasons you should enjoy pizza from a restaurant instead of making it yourself:

  • Select from an array of toppings.
  • Support your local community.
  • Relax and take a break from cooking.
  • Enjoy guaranteed quality with every slice.

Pizza is a tasty and easy meal choice any day of the week, especially for families with children. When you’re craving variety, it can be fun to branch out and experiment with other dishes in addition to your favorite pizza. Green Lantern Pizza is renowned for its classic Detroit-style pizza with a wide variety of toppings and flavors to keep your dinner guests coming back for more.

Here are some of our recommendations on what to serve with pizza the next time you host a pizza dinner or party!

What goes with pizza for dinner? Whether you want simple, classic or adventurous, there are dozens of delectable pizza topping combinations to sample. Pepperoni is a long-standing beloved choice of pizza toppings among Americans: one in three people choose pepperoni as their favorite topping! However, numerous other toppings are rising quickly in popularity. A fast-growing new favorite of many is Hawaiian pizza, which features ham and sweet pineapple.

Many pizza enthusiasts also like to try sandwich-inspired toppings, such as BLT or cheeseburger pizzas. Other pizza lovers favor playing with proteins such as fresh seafood, BBQ chicken or a combination of sausage, pepperoni, ham, ground beef, salami and bacon, culminating in the almighty meat lover’s pizza.

There are also numerous meatless options suitable for cheese and vegetable lovers, such as four-cheese pizza and a delicious vegetarian pizza piled high with green peppers, onion, spinach, mushrooms and black olives.

When you’re looking for the best appetizers and sides to go with pizza, you’ll want to find tasty options that will harmonize with your favorite slices. Fortunately, numerous dishes can complement and balance out the star of the meal.

Some good sides for a pizza party include chicken tenders and traditional or boneless wings with an assortment of dipping sauces. Tenders and wings provide great protein sources to balance out the carbohydrate of pizza and are sure to please your dinner and party guests.

Vegetables are also a great addition to a pizza dinner. You can find many recipes for healthy yet rich veggie dishes, such as asparagus, brussels sprouts, coleslaw and broccoli rabe with chickpeas. You might also include a hearty stew, like ratatouille, a traditional French dish made with tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant and mozzarella.

If you’re wondering what to serve with pizza at a party, consider mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, onion rings, garlic bread or spinach and artichoke dip for easy finger-food options. Need something to pass around for dinner? Put together a quick Italian bruschetta platter to offer something that will please all palettes.

Salads can be a fantastic and healthy side when you don't know what to have with pizza

In addition to appetizers, salads can be a fantastic and healthy side when you don’t know what to have with pizza.

Leafy Green Salads

For a salad that embodies classic Italian flavors, you’ll want to try antipasto. Green Lantern Pizza’s antipasto salad contains a blend of iceberg and romaine lettuce, salami, ham, mozzarella, red onion, black olives, egg and pepperoncini.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can create a healthy and tangy Tuscan kale salad to complete your pizza dinner. A Greek salad offers a blend of feta cheese, beets, olives and onion that will go great with pizza, or you can try a fresh garden salad with a mix of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, croutons and cheese.

Twists on the Classic Salad

If you’re looking to expand from the regular green salad to go with pizza, you can choose from a wide variety of other dishes! Try a light and easy broccoli salad filled with currants, red onion and almonds, or make a pasta salad with farfalle, prosciutto, tomatoes and loads of herbs.

A homemade potato salad offers your guests a filling and complementary side dish, or you can experiment with an asparagus caesar salad for a playful take on a classic. A fruit-focused berry Caprese salad is another beautiful and fresh summer salad that will impress your guests, whether you’re hosting a formal dinner or a pool party.

So, what are the best drinks to serve with pizza? Whether you’re searching for the perfect beer pairing or something for the kids, plenty of drink options go well with pizza.

Alcoholic Beverages

It’s no secret that beer and pizza are a perfect match. For your next night-in, serve some home-brewed or craft beer with dinner to wow your guests and amplify your meal. Try some golden ale to accentuate your slice of Hawaiian or a dark smoked beer to heighten the taste of meat lovers pizza. An American brown ale pairs perfectly with that classic piece of pepperoni, and a Berliner Weiss can bring out the fresh-caught flavors of seafood pizza.

If you prefer wine, consider an authentic Italian pairing that will bring out the pizza’s flavors! You’ll want to find a wine that matches the acidity of the pizza sauce and the richness of the cheese. A fruity red wine can complement a meat lover’s pizza, while a sweet white wine works well with plain cheese. Chianti is a classic pairing for a savory vegetable pizza with fresh herbs, while riesling is a decadent option for sweet pizzas like Hawaiian.

For many, whiskey is another excellent choice of alcohol to balance out the rich cheesy flavors of a pizza. Connoisseurs recommend a bourbon with Hawaiian pizza, blended whisky with veggie pizza and Irish whiskey with meat lovers pizza.

Nonalcoholic Options

Wondering what nonalcoholic drinks to serve with pizza for dinner? You’d be surprised as to how many nonalcoholic drinks pair well with cheese!

Many people consider soda to be the perfect beverage for a pizza party. Its sweetness goes exceptionally well with the savory saltiness of pizza. A fruity lemon-lime soda, a classic cola or a pleasantly fizzy root beer is a treat kids will love to have with pizza. On the other hand, sparkling water provides a healthy alternative to soda that is low in sugar but retains the bubbly kick from carbonation. You can add some fresh lemon and lime juice for extra refreshment and elevation from regular still water.

For those who prefer non-carbonated beverages with their pizza, lemonade is a quality choice. Lemonade complements pizza well due to its sourness and its cold, refreshing and summery taste. Many pizza lovers also appreciate the creamy, cool and soothing characteristics of milk. Dairy milk and other milk alternatives pair well with pizza’s heat and acidity and can also cut the spiciness of pepperoni and sausage toppings. If you’re searching for a child-friendly option, milk is sure to please.

Chicago Pizza vs. Detroit Pizza

Chicago pizza vs. Detroit pizza

Quick Links

Does discerning the differences between pizza style s make your head spin? This guide to Chicago-style pizza vs. Detroit-style pizza will help you become a pizza expert by breaking down the definitions of the two and examining the most notable differences between their main ingredients.

From Detroit-style pizza cheese to Chicago-style pizza toppings, you’ll discover everything there is to know about these famous pizza-making techniques. Keep reading to learn all the details you need to make a fully informed pizza decision.

What Is Detroit-Style Pizza?

Detroit-style pizza features a thick and chewy crust with a bright red tomato sauce and melty Wisconsin brick cheese in a rectangular shape. The cheese on a Detroit-style pizza is so overflowing that it extends over the edges, giving the bottom layer of the crust a crunchy, fried texture. While the outside is coated in crispy caramelized cheese, the center of the pizza’s bread base is still doughy.

Although the crust is a defining characteristic of a Detroit slice, the pizza style is also known for its long, vertical streaks of sauce, called “racing stripes.” A Detroit-style pizza can be finished off with whatever variety of toppings you’d like, but the most popular and traditional choice is pepperoni.

What Is Chicago-Style Pizza?

Chicago is most famous for its deep-dish pizza. The identifying feature of a Chicago-style pizza is its high-edged pie crust, which provides plenty of room for copious amounts of cheese, a chunky tomato sauce and layers of toppings. The deep-dish pizza gets baked in a circular pan with tall enough walls for the dough to expand.

Chicago-style deep-dish pizza also changes up the traditional structure of a pizza by pouring its sauce on top of the cheese. Making a Chicago-style pizza starts by pressing the dough into a deep pan, placing mozzarella slices over the crust, stacking on any desired toppings and finishing it off with marinara before popping the pan in the oven. After about half an hour or so, the pie will be piping hot and ready to eat.
Chicago-style pizza and Detroit-style pizza usually differ with regard to crust, sauce, and cheese.

Chicago-Style Pizza vs. Detroit-Style Pizza

Below, you’ll discover the basic differences between Chicago-style and Detroit-style pizza regarding the crust, sauce, cheese and toppings.

The Crust

Although both Chicago-style pizza and Detroit-style pizza have a deeper foundation than a thin-crust pizza, their crusts are distinct from each other. A Chicago-style slice is built upon a flaky, thin, deep crust similar to a traditional pie. On the other hand, Detroit-style pizza relies on a thick and fluffy crust reminiscent of focaccia.

A Detroit-style crust stands out among other crusts thanks to its airier texture and cheesy, crispy underside. To achieve its famous combination of a crunchy outside and chewy center, Detroit-style pizza requires a wetter dough than other types of pizza. When Detroit-style pizza dough finds the perfect ratio of water to flour, the resulting crust will be able to maintain its soft inside while developing a crispy exterior.

Because Chicago-style pizza is quite deep, the crust is sturdy and thick, yet flaky like pie dough. Therefore, a Chicago-style pizza crust is less airy and bready than a Detroit-style pizza crust. Instead, the crust of a Chicago-style pizza is buttery, rich and spread over the walls of a round pie pan.

The Sauce

Both Detroit-style pizza and Chicago-style pizza go against pizza tradition by layering their sauces over the top of their cheese. Additionally, both types of pizza use a savory tomato-based sauce to round out their flavor profile. Despite these base similarities, there are a few key differences between the sauces.

Detroit-style pizza sauce gets added as dollops or thick lines affectionately known as “racing stripes.” Sometimes, a Detroit-style pizza recipe calls for adding the sauce after the pizza finishes baking to protect the sauce from getting soggy as it cooks. This variation is known as a “red top” because the sauce becomes the pizza’s final topping.

On the other hand, Chicago-style pizza sauce is always scooped on top of the cheese layer before baking. Covering the cheese with a chunky crushed tomato sauce helps to keep the cheese from burning as the pizza bakes. Because deep-dish pizza requires a longer cooking time, the cheese in a Chicago-style pie needs this extra protection.

The Cheese

When it comes to cheese, Detroit-style pizza and Chicago-style pizza are vastly different. Detroit-style pizza is usually made with a mix of Wisconsin brick cheese and a more mild semi-soft cheese with a high fat content. The fat from the Wisconsin brick cheese gives the crust a delicious buttery taste, while the cheese’s texture stays gooey in the middle as it spreads over the edges of the crust and forms a crispy, cheesy shell.

Chicago-style pizza doesn’t need any extra buttery flavors, thanks to its already buttery pie crust. Instead, Chicago-style pizza cheese is traditionally a mild and creamy mozzarella. The thick slices of mozzarella used to make a Chicago-style pie create slices with long strings of gooey, cheesy goodness, as opposed to Detroit-style slices, which have a crunchy caramelized cheese casing.

The Toppings

A Detroit-style pizza is traditionally topped with pepperoni — but not the large, flat circles of pepperoni that typically come to mind when we picture a slice of ordinary pepperoni pizza. Detroit-style pepperoni pizza is made with smaller, thicker rounds of pepperoni that curl up into tiny cups as they cook. These bite-sized pepperoni cups hold onto their fat to boost the pizza’s flavors as it bakes.

The traditional topping for a Chicago-style slice is sausage. In a Chicago-style pie, the sausage crumbles get spread on top of the cheese before being topped with tomato sauce. Any other fillings included in a Chicago-style pizza, like meats or veggies, also get placed in the middle between the cheese and sauce.

While pepperoni and sausage might be the most common Detroit-style and Chicago-style pizza toppings, you can add nearly anything to jazz up your pizza. If you’re an adventurous topper, try one of the following Chicago-style and Detroit-style pizza toppings:

  • Chicken
  • Pineapple
  • Bacon
  • Green peppers
  • Black olives
  • Mushrooms
  • Ham
  • Feta
  • Artichoke
  • Jalapeno
  • Anchovies
  • Roasted garlic

How Many Pizzas Do You Need to Order?

How many pizzas do you need to order

Quick Links

People love pizza. The average American adult will eat almost 6,000 slices of pizza in their lifetime. Even more mind-boggling, the U.S. consumes 3 billion pizzas every year — that’s over 8 million pizzas ordered every day. For your next party or family night, skip catering and stick with America’s favorite cuisine, pizza.

In this guide, we’ll make figuring out how many pizzas to order simple with one rule. The 3/8 rule — get an idea of how many mouths you’ll be feeding, and assume each will eat about three slices of pizza.

Even with that rule in mind, you may still wonder how many pizzas you need based on what you want to order. Below, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions of ordering the right number of pizzas for your party or family gathering.

How Many Slices of Pizza per Person?

Account for about three slices of pizza per person. Use this as a general guideline, and be aware that some people may consume more or less. If you’re ordering pizza for a hungry football team, you might want to order more pizzas than you normally would. Comparatively, if you’re ordering pizzas for a kid’s birthday party, you can order less than usual as kids usually eat less food than adults do.

You can best calculate how many pizzas to order by considering:

  • The total number of people you’re feeding
  • The average number of slices people eat per sitting
  • The age of your guests
  • The predicted appetite of your guests
  • If you’ll be ordering or serving other sides or snacks

The best way to calculate how many pizzas you should order is by following the 3/8 rule

How Many Pizzas Do I Need for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 People?

Pizza ordering micrographic with a helpful table

The best way to calculate how many pizzas you should order is by following the 3/8 rule. Each guest is likely to eat three pizza slices, and the average large pizza serves around eight slices. Remember to round up to get whole numbers and order more or less based on your party’s needs. With this rule, depending on the number of people you’re ordering for, you should order the following number of pizzas:

  • Five people: Order two pizzas, assuming each person eats 15 slices.
  • 10 people: Order four pizzas, as guests will likely eat a total of 30 slices.
  • 15 people: Order six pizzas if each guest eats three slices for 45 total slices.
  • 20 people: Order eight pizzas, assuming all 20 guests eat 60 slices total.
  • 25 people: Order 10 pizzas if all guests eat a total of 75 slices.

Note that how many pizzas you order for your party will also depend on the pie sizes you select.

How Many People Does a Small 10″ Pizza Feed?

A small pizza contains, on average, four slices. Therefore, small pizzas can feed around one adult or two children. Order a small pizza if you’re ordering for the children in the family or if you’re ordering a unique topping for a specific guest or family member to enjoy.

How Many People Does a Medium 12″ Pizza Feed?

Medium pizzas contain around six slices of pizza, feeding two adults or three children. You can’t go wrong with ordering a medium pizza or two for pizza night with your significant other or family. You could also order unique toppings on a medium pizza and crowd-pleasers like cheese or pepperoni on larger sizes for a big party.

How Many People Does a Large 14″ Pizza Feed?

A large pizza usually contains eight slices, while an extra-large pizza contains around 10. Following the same rule that an average adult will eat around three slices, a large pizza will feed around two adults or four children. An extra-large pizza would feed around three adults and five children. It’s recommended to order commonly loved toppings in larger sizes.

Is It Better to Get 2 Medium Pizzas or 1 Large Pizza?

Really, it depends on the number of mouths you’re feeding. Let’s break down the numbers. The average medium pizza costs around $10, give or take, for six slices of pizza. And the average large pizza costs only a few dollars more for eight slices. That’s assuming you aren’t getting toppings.

If you’re trying to feed around five people, order three medium pizzas. If you’re trying to feed less than that, say around three to four people, save money by ordering two large pizzas.

Let’s look at another scenario — if you’re trying to feed 15 people, you’ll want around 45 slices. That means you can order eight medium-sized pizzas or six large pizzas. In this case, you’ll save money by ordering six large pizzas.

Overall, what’s best for your get-together or gathering will come down to the toppings. If you need more variety in your topping offerings, medium pizzas may be the better option. If everyone’s on the same page with what they want, you could order a large instead.

How Does Pizza Type Affect the Quantity You Need?

A factor that’s commonly overlooked is the type of pizza you’re ordering. Different styles of pizzas can leave you more full than others, meaning you and your guests will eat fewer slices. Pizzas loaded with toppings or with thicker crusts might leave your guests satisfied with just a couple of slices.

When you order less filling pizza types like thin crust, you’ll want to order more pizzas to account for the higher consumption. If you order denser pizza types like deep-dish, order a bit less than you normally would.

How to Keep Pizza Warm at a Party

How to Keep Pizza Warm at a Party

Quick Links

Who doesn’t love pizza at a party? You can never go wrong with a pepperoni or cheese pizza at a party — adults love it, and kids beg for it. But how do you keep pizza warm throughout your event? In this post, we’ll travel with your pizza and provide tips on how to keep it warm from the first moment you pick it up to the last minute your guests leave. As a bonus, some of these suggestions make great ways to heat up the pizza for tomorrow’s leftovers!

1. On Your Way Home

Our journey starts at the restaurant. If you choose to have your pizza delivered, you can skip this step. Otherwise, a tip on how to keep your pizza warm while traveling is to use a heated seat.

Though heated seats are typically used for keeping you warm during the colder months, they work great at keeping your pizza warm, too. On your way home, put your pizza on a heated seat and cover it with a blanket to trap the warmth. If you don’t have heated seats, put the pizza on the passenger side floor and crank up the heat in the floor vents. It may sound comical, but whatever works, right?

2. Indoors

Tips to keep your pizza warm for three or more hours

Once your pizza has safely made it to your home, your next goal is to keep it warm throughout the duration of your party. Some tips on how to keep your pizza warm for three or more hours at your party include:

In Aluminum Foil

If you’re still waiting for guests to arrive, start plating your portions. Wrap each slice in aluminum foil so the pizza can hold its heat. If the slices get cold by the time your guests arrive, pop the pizza — still wrapped in foil — into the oven at 400 degrees for around 5 minutes to 10 minutes. After it’s heated, remove the aluminum foil and serve the pizza to your guests.

In Your Oven

Most people rely on their ovens to reheat pizza. There are two ways you can keep your pizza warm in the oven:

  • In the box: Don’t panic! Pizza boxes won’t catch fire until they reach over 400 degrees. For this method, set your oven at the lowest temperature and slide your pizza, still in its box, onto the middle rack. If you’re short on time, you can crank the heat up a bit.
  • Out of the box: This method works best if your pizza is cooler and you want to reheat it, rather than trying to keep it warm. Preheat your oven to about 350 degrees and place your pizza directly onto the middle rack. The higher temperature will keep your crust crispy and any sauces or toppings warm.

You can use a toaster oven, too, if your oven is full of other party snacks. Follow the same principles of heating your pizza at a higher temperature for a shorter amount of time, and your pizza will turn out perfect every time.

In a Frying Pan

Are you running out of space in your oven and toaster oven? If so, try heating up your pizza in the frying pan. This method isn’t ideal if you’re heating up whole pizzas at a time, but it does work well when reviving the last few slices from your event.

On your stovetop, heat a non-stick frying pan on high heat. Once heated, place your pizza in the frying pan and let it heat up for about two minutes. These two minutes will allow the bottom of the pizza to get nice and crispy. Then, place a lid over the pan and continue heating for another minute or two, allowing for the cheese, sauce and toppings to warm.

In the Microwave

Running out of stovetop space, too? In a quick pinch? Use your trusted microwave. Make sure your microwave is wide enough for your pizza slices. Then, place your pizza on a microwave-safe plate. Separately, fill a shallow, microwave-safe bowl 2/3 full of water. Place the bowl inside the center of your microwave, and place your plate of pizza on top of the bowl.

The water inside of the bowl will evaporate and prevent the pizza from getting soft and mushy. Microwave your pizza at half power for about a minute. Check your pizza, and microwave for another minute or two if needed.

3. Outdoors

Some methods to keep your pizza warm at an outdoor party

Hosting an outdoor event can be a bit more tricky when it comes to keeping your pizza warm. At your concession stand, some methods on how to keep your pizza warm at an outdoor party include:

In a Portable Oven

On your concession table, keep your pizza warm by using a portable oven. You can easily find a portable oven online, and most aren’t too expensive. Portable ovens look like a large lunchbox that heats up. Place your pizza inside of the portable oven to keep it warm, or turn up the heat and leave them in longer when reheating slices. The instructions may vary depending on the portable oven you buy.

In an Insulated Bag

While guests are enjoying the beginning of your party or event, keep pizzas warm by storing them in an insulated bag. This is actually how most pizza delivery companies keep their pizzas warm during the ride to your home or business. You can find pizza-specific insulated bags online. They may not be able to keep your pizza warm for three hours, though, so this method is best combined with other heating methods.

Detroit is a strong city known for many things, namely cars, music and pizza. Known as the Detroit-style square, Detroit’s pizza has earned its reputation as one of the best slices around. With its distinct rectangular shape, light and airy dough, crispy caramelized cheese perimeter and delightful crunch, Detroit-style pizza was built for savoring.

But what exactly makes a pan pizza Detroit-style, and why is a hearty Detroit slice so highly sought after? In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about this delicious Detroit dish from what qualities define a Detroit-style pizza and how a Detroit-style pizza is made to what separates a Detroit-style pie from other types of deep-dish pizza. If you’re looking for a pizza unlike any other, learn more about Detroit-style!

What Are the Defining Characteristics of Detroit-Style Pizza?

Detroit-style pizza is a thick, square-cut pizza with a crunchy, fried bottom layer of crust overflowing with delicious melted cheese. Like most rectangular pan pizzas served in America, Detroit-style pizza is a variation of the Sicilian pizza. Originally called “sfincione,” which means “little sponge,” Sicilian pizza has a fluffier bread base than most U.S. pizzas.

Detroit-style pizza sets itself apart from Sicilian pizza with its cheese-covered crust, which is typically so crispy that the cheese is slightly burnt, and its long, vertical streaks of sauce on top of the cheese. The result of this unique pizza style is a gooey, doughy center with a crunchy outer crust and caramelized cheese hugging its edges.

The traditional topping for a Detroit-style pizza is pepperoni, but Detroit-style pizza doesn’t use just any pepperoni. Instead of the large, flat circular pepperoni that comes on most ordinary pizzas, Detroit-style pizza features smaller, thicker slices of pepperoni that curl up into miniature cups as they cook. These cute little pepperoni cups hold onto their fat and enhance the pizza during the baking process.

How Is Detroit-Style Pizza Made?

Making Detroit-style pizza starts with the dough. Because Detroit-style pizza is known for its more airy center with a crusty outside, the dough must be hydrated just right, which means achieving the perfect ratio of water to flour. To create its crust’s famous open, fluffy and chewy center with a crisp exterior, Detroit-style pizza uses a wetter dough.

The next all-important factor for making a flawless Detroit-style pizza is the pan. As a deep-dish rectangular pizza, Detroit-style pizza is best cooked in a steel industrial pan with sides angled outwards to make the area at the top of the pan greater than the area at the bottom. A 10-by-14-inch pan with black surfaces is ideal for ensuring the dough fills the entire pan and its sides get a nice crisp.

Unlike most other pizza styles, Detroit-style pizza layers the crust with cheese and toppings below the sauce. Traditionally, Detroit-style pizza uses Wisconsin brick cheese, a mildly flavored semi-soft cheese with a high fat content, as opposed to the usual mozzarella. The fat from Wisconsin brick cheese lends the crust some mouth-watering buttery flavor, while the cheese itself stays gooey in the center as it spreads toward the edges of the pie to caramelize into a golden, cheesy crust.

Detroit Style Pizza with Mild Brick Cheese

Sometimes the cheese is added first, and sometimes the toppings are placed directly on the crust, but the sauce is always ladled onto the pizza last as the finishing layer of flavor. A Detroit-style pizza features a tomato-based sauce that excellently complements the more mild brick cheese, which tastes similar to cheddar. The sauce can be applied as blotchy dollops or as thick lines called “racing stripes.”

Some recipes recommend adding the sauce after the pizza comes out of the oven, which is referred to as “red top” because the sauce is the final topping. By waiting until the last second to add the sauce, the crust is protected from ever getting soggy. Whether the sauce is added before or after it enters the oven, a Detroit-style pizza should be baked at about 440 degrees Fahrenheit for around 13 minutes to ensure a perfect pie.

Once the pizza is done cooking, it gets cut into squares to make it definitively Detroit-style. Because these square slices are served piping hot, many diners choose to eat Detroit-style pizza with a fork and knife, although some dedicated Detroit pizza fans do dare to brave the heat and go without utensils.

How Is Detroit-Style Pizza Different From Other Types of Pizza?

Typically, the image that comes to mind when someone says “pizza” is a round, thin-crust pie with stringy melted mozzarella cheese dropping off of flimsy triangular slices. Detroit-style pizza deviates from these conventions entirely with its rectangular shape, sauce-topped cheese and a crust so thick it would be impossible to fold.

Although Detroit-style pizza is completely different from conventional thin-crust pizzas like a New York slice, it does share some common features with other pan pizzas. So what separates a slice of Detroit-style pizza from a slice of any other Sicilian pizza descendant?

The most notable quality of Detroit-style pizza when comparing it to other pan pizzas is its cheese. A Detroit-style pie has cheese spread everywhere on top, which gives it a distinct crispy layer of burnt cheese around its edges. The fat drippings from the Wisconsin brick cheese used to top the pie also help to fry the sides and bottom of the crust as the pizza cooks.

While other pizza types may be considered deep dish, Detroit-style pizza sets itself apart with its soft inside and crispy outside. While Chicago-style pizza features a flakier, thin deep crust like a traditional pie, Detroit-style pizza stars a thick crust that closely resembles focaccia. The Detroit-style crust sets itself apart from a Sicilian crust with its airier texture, fluffy chew and crispy underside.

Similar to a Chicago deep-dish pizza, a Detroit-style pizza scoops its sauce over top of its cheese. However, a Detroit-style pizza doesn’t use nearly as much sauce as Chicago-style and stands out with its spotted dollops of sauce or sleek red racing stripes. In fact, the unique aesthetic of Detroit-style pizza’s tomato sauce artfully contrasting with its burnt cheese edges has made the food a social media hit.
